Luis Elortondo, our Sourcing Director, continues to travel the world to discover the places where the best fruits are harvested.
This week he was with a Mexican producer / packer of citrus fruits, from Hermosillo Sonora, a desert area with little rainfall and sandy soil, with the ideal conditions to produce Valencia oranges, similar to those in California, but very clean skin and appearance.
This family company, led by Enrique and his 2 sons, exports Valencia oranges and other citrus fruits mainly to the USA, but also to Japan and Canada.
Not only do they have their own packaging center integrated with the latest technology, where all the fruit they sell is processed, but they also have all the food safety and social responsibility certificates.
What stood out from this trip? “The way of working impressed me positively: they have 3 cold tunnels, something not very common in citrus fruits, which improves the shelf life of the product and also, they have a monitor on the packaging that shows the defects that the fruit can have.”
