One apple a day keeps the doctor away
After a year in which the COVID-19 pandemic surprised us, this saying is more important than ever!
In Salix, we began a very active 2021 with a January in which we dispatched the first shipments of Chilean apples. The season continues from strength to strength and we already have an interesting volume loaded, especially Royal Gala apples, from the lack in the markets of the northern hemisphere.
With its almost 35 thousand hectares, Chile has 2% of the world production of this fruit and 29% of the production of the southern hemisphere. Also, it is the fourth apple exporter in the world and the main one in the southern hemisphere, thanks to its varietal change that has allowed it to achieve this position.
The main markets for this fruit are the Middle East (42%), Europe (34%), Asia (11%), Latin America (10%), and North America (3%).
Its greatest exponents are the Gala and Fuji varieties, along with Cripps Pink and Red Delicious, but the Andean country surprises us every year with new varieties of excellent quality, which we have added to our offer. Brookfield®, Buckeye® Gala, Fuji RakuRaku, Fuji Fubrax, Rosy Glow and Pink Lady, among others, have been gaining importance in the market.
At Salix, we commercialize apples from the United States, France, Chile, and South Africa as the main origins, while we complement with Spain, Italy, and Turkey in the off-season, which allows us to offer this fruit all year round.
“This season we hope to exceed the 2020 numbers, shipping more than 100,000 boxes mainly in Latin America and the Middle East” says Maximiliano Guevara, Country Manager for Chile
